PREMIUM IOL's

Premium IOL’s provide both near and far vision and significantly either reduce or in some cases eliminate the need for glasses after cataract surgery.

PREMIUM LENS IMPLANTS

Many patients believe cataract surgery will enable perfect vision without glasses. While cataract surgery with an intraocular lens (IOL) improves vision, traditional monofocal IOLs provide fixed focus, requiring glasses for a full range of vision.

The natural lens in young eyes functions like a camera’s auto-focus, shifting focus from far to near. This ability diminishes with age, necessitating bifocals or reading glasses.

Traditional monofocal IOLs offer vision at one distance. With over 50 implant powers, measurements before surgery aim to correct distance vision, but there’s no trial-and-error like with glasses prescriptions and no guarantee of perfect distance focus.

Traditional monofocal IOLs do NOT correct astigmatism. However, premium toric IOLs improve vision and reduce dependence on strong prescription glasses for patients with astigmatism.

Premium multifocal and extended depth of focus IOLs can reduce astigmatism and the need for reading glasses. Multifocal IOLs create a dual focus, with part of the lens for distance and part for near vision. Additionally, the Light Adjustable Lens can be adjusted post-surgery to further reduce your need for glasses.

Only certain patients are good candidates for premium IOLs. Premium implants are more expensive and not covered by insurance, as they are not medically necessary. Potential tradeoffs include significant halos and glare at night, which vary based on factors like pupil size and implant type.

Our goal is to offer a full range of implant options with state-of-the-art microincision cataract surgery, tailored to your visual needs. After a thorough eye examination, we will recommend the best implant options for your situation.

Eyhance Toric Intraocular Lens

The Eyhance Toric Intraocular Lens (IOL) is a FDA approved IOL that can be implanted at the time of your cataract surgery to replace your clouded lens. The unique design of the Eyhance Toric makes it possible to reduce or eliminate corneal astigmatism and significantly improve your uncorrected distance vision. This IOL is fixed focus and most patients will still need reading glasses at a minimum after surgery. It must be emphasized that we cannot guarantee you that your astigmatism will be eliminated. In FDA studies however, 97% of patients that had the Tecnis Toric IOL implanted bilaterally achieved spectacle freedom for distance vision after their surgery.

The Eyhance Toric IOL is custom ordered to correct your astigmatism as well as replace the function of your natural lens. Special pre-operative tests and a computer program to determine the exact IOL that would be best for you. The Toric IOL is considered a premium IOL and the expense of this IOL and additional procedure is NOT covered by your insurance. Prior to your procedure the office staff will review with you exactly what your additional out of pocket expense would be if you decide to have your astigmatism surgically addressed. If you have a very large amount of astigmatism it may be necessary to utilize the Toric IOL combined with limbal relaxing incisions at the time of your surgery to give you the best post-operative results.

The TECNIS Symfony® Toric Implant is potentially an option for those patients with pre-existing astigmatism that also want to decrease their dependence on glasses for near and intermediate visual tasks. This implant utilizes the same technology as the Eyhance Toric IOL to correct your astigmatism but also takes advantage of new optical properties that extend your range of focus and therefore decrease your dependence on glasses for near or intermediate visual tasks.

The surgeons and staff are committed to offering their patients a complete range of options and to offer state-of-the-art microincision cataract surgery in a cost-effective and compassionate manner. Which IOL and procedure to utilize is an individualized decision and it is important that you be as informed as possible. Certainly, there can be no guarantee’s regarding results, but we can guarantee you that we will do everything possible to make your microincision cataract surgery successful.

TECNIS SYMFONY® PREMIUM IMPLANT

The premium TECNIS Symfony® Implant is the first and only FDA approved extended depth of focus implant that takes advantage of new optical technology to decrease your dependence on glasses after cataract surgery. For patients with pre-existing astigmatism, there is a TECNIS Symfony® Toric implant as well. Clinical studies have proven that that new Symfony® extended depth of focus optical technology provides better uncorrected intermediate and near vision without glasses compared to a standard monofocal implant. Dr. Ullman was the first surgeon to implant the TECNIS Symfony® Implant in the Florida Panhandle.
